The
Junior Sailing Team is a program, for children ages 8-14 from April through
October, which imparts a lifelong love of boating. The program focuses on the
advanced boat handling skills required for safely operation in all conditions.
The team creates respect and camaraderie among all participants. “The
main focus is to get the juniors on the water safely maneuvering boats and
having fun. The skill to safely handle a sailboat by yourself gives kids the
self-confidence that translates into valuable life skills.” - Adam T. Gautier,
PYC Parent Volunteer.
We establish safety first as a
principle. For the juniors to enjoy
sailing, they must feel that they are safe and have the skills in boat handling,
navigation, problem-solving, and decision-making required to establish
confidence. A junior in safe control of their vessel and harnessing the power
of nature to achieve a goal is something that no other organized sport can
provide and provides confidence that will serve them through life.

It is not the destination for every junior to be an active participant in
organized competition, but The PYC Junior Sailing Team will be more than just
racing and regatta participation. The
PYC will hosted two sessions.
Session A focused on sailing knowledge and
fun on-the- water experiences. This
session was the next step beyond the skills learned at Sailing Camp. We used standard US Sailing curriculum to establish safety and confidence in the
juniors. Session B expanded to racing and enhanced
experience. Culminating in the Annual Pumpkin Regatta the team will continue
the development of boat handling skills to prepare for a fun event for all
participants.
